Interview with Patawawa: Derbyshire’s Disco Trio Patawawa band interview artwork Patawawa from left to right: Rory Lovatt, Sam Wilmot and Beth Garrett Dancefloor delinquents Patawawa are a friendly, funk ready nu-disco trio previously voted The Guardian’s “Band of the Week” who guarantee to seduce anyone with a pulse for the disco beat. We sat down with the Derbyshire based band and picked their brains to find out a little bit more about what inspires them and their music. For someone whose never heard you before, how would you describe your sound? A mix of all things nice! Disco, Funk, Indie and Pop! Where did the name Patawawa come from? We went through a difficult period of picking a band name like most bands do, we just couldn’t agree on one for about three months then all of a sudden Rory lept out of his deck chair and bellowed like Brian Blessed “PATAWAWA”! We thought it was so out there and cool and trendy that we kept it. What are your musical icons/influences? We all have are own music tastes but we all love disco through and through. In terms of musical influences we love Chic, Sister Sledge, Earth Wind & Fire…. those kind of vibes, vibes on vibes. What inspired you to make music together? We all met at school but me [Sam] and Rory had been making music under the stairs in his Dads house since we were about 14. One day we made a track called “Charmer” and asked Beth to sing on it. We sent it across to BBC Introducing and it got played by the lovely Dean Jackson. After that we asked Beth to be in the band permenantly and at that point we had to change the name because we were called “Sam and Raw”. The rest is history… If you could choose anyone in the world, who would you choose to perform alongside? We would love to perform alongside Chic, that would be mega! Which of your tracks are you most proud of? Probably “Red and White”. Ever since it was finished we’ve ended pretty much every set with it, that’s got to count for something. We’re also so proud of our latest tune “Could Be Love” which comes out on 2nd December, we love the way it came together and we’re really chuffed with the end result. Are you working on anything new at the moment? We have 2 new demo’s that we are all really excited about! They are called “Diversion” and “Zombongo” We cant wait till they’re finished and sitting pretty at number 1 and number 2 in the charts!
